Fireworks are an iconic and celebrated activity across America. And in many communities backyard fireworks have exploded and near rival professional displays as neighbors compete to put on bigger, better, and even louder events.

For dogs, they represent a frightening and unknown event.

Fireworks are a top anxiety producer in dogs, according to veterinarians, who report that 75% of dogs have fireworks anxiety. The experience ramps up their instinctual flee or flight response. In most cases, dogs run. Among the 10 million runaways reported annually, more occur over the 4th of July holiday than any other time, according to American Humane. Sadly, among them, 20% never make it back home.
