THE DOG CHRONICLE COMMENTARY – In ancient times, cats were worshipped as gods. They have not forgotten this, according to Terry Prachett.
My dog would rather have her authority usurped by anything but cats, who she seems to feel are condescending and somewhat inferior to herself and other creatures in our household, which operates under a clear banner: Dogs rule.
History, it seems, has re-written itself.
John Bradshaw is a cat-behavior expert at the University of Bristol and the author of the book Cat Sense. says cats seem to see things “differently” than dogs when it comes to people-pleasing behavior. After observing pet cats for several years, he concluded that they really don’t understand us the way dogs do.
Unlike dogs, our feline friends treat us like other cats, according to Bradshaw, whose observations are documented in a National Geographic interview.
Putting their tails up in the air, rubbing around our legs, sitting beside and grooming us are exactly what cats do with each other, according to the author. Dogs, on the other hand, change their behavior in accordance with the behaviors people find pleasing.
They will roll over, shake hands and fetch like nobody’s business if that’s what makes us happy.
Pups are people pleasers who read human emotions, according to researcher Dr. Kun Guo of the University of Lincoln’s School of Psychology.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather who has a dog who understands how I’m feeling than a cat who doesn’t care.
